Indie Game : The Movie
- What are some of the difference between "big games" and "independent games" in terms of style/concepts and how they are made?
Big production games have larger companies working towards them and have more stability in the job, however less creativity. Indie game creators like to work alone, not with a company because they say that creating a game with a big company doesn't have enough creative expression and that it would drive them crazy. One example he gave was that in a company's production of a game he could never add a picture of the character giving the bird to the player, since it would be against regulations.
- What are some of the difficulties the developers in the film had to overcome?
The pressure put on the developers of the independent games is really hard to deal with sometimes. The one developer was talking about how people keep messaging him saying "why is it taking so long", "you suck" and "I hate you". He said that since he and one other guys are solely developing an entire game themselves, it is really hard to compete it as fast as some other commercial producers (who have like 1000 workers on a game).
- What do you think you would like about working on an indie (independent) game? What do you think you might not like?
I would like the individual freedom and creativity that wouldn't exists in a bigger company's production of a game. However, I know personally I couldn't deal with the pressure being pushed on t=me by the public. I would get so stressed out and I wouldn't end up enjoying what I am doing.
- What is some advice you could offer to someone who is trying to create their own game, based on what you learned in the film?
I would honestly just want to be as supportive as I could for them, because I know understand how stressful extra pressure to finish is. I would just encourage them to continue at their own pace, so that they would hopefully enjoy the creation of the game and not instead begin to hate it because of the large workloads. Just basically be healthy to yourself and keep your physical and mental health in check.
- For the developers, what is the best part of completing the creation of a game?
Seeing people enjoy their game and the ratings and positive feedback given by the public. Seeing people experience their game and understand the personality expressed in their creation. Being so vulnerable and showing people yourself with such honesty is stressful, but when they enjoy it, it gives them a lot of joy, pride and relief.
